Top 10 cities for living are carefully planned to provide residents with a healthy lifestyle and access to various amenities and facilities. However, this is mainly true for modern and planned cities designed specifically for this purpose. In many countries, especially developing nations, the historic cities have grown into metropolitan areas. Every year, the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), a think tank and policy unit, assesses over 140 cities based on their livability and compiles a list of the top 10.
The EIU scores each city on the livability index based on more than 30 qualitative and quantitative factors. These factors are divided into five major categories: stability (25%), healthcare (20%), culture and environment (25%), education (10%), and infrastructure (20%).
2021 Ratings
For the 2021 ratings, the livability index was significantly modified due to the coronavirus pandemic. Therefore, the index was modified to a larger degree to see which cities were able to incorporate health and safety protocols in light of the pandemic and return to normalcy by containing the spread of the virus.
It also considered the stress on healthcare resources and restrictions on local sporting events while calculating scores for the healthcare, culture and environment, and education categories.
As we all know, New Zealand was able to contain the spread of the coronavirus within weeks of it being declared a pandemic. For this reason, Auckland, New Zealand, tops the list for containing the virus’s spread and resuming normal activities by removing lockdowns.
Remaining Cities:
The EIU’s website published a list of cities that includes Osaka and Tokyo in Japan; Adelaide, Perth, Melbourne, and Brisbane in Australia; and Wellington, New Zealand, as well as Geneva and Zurich in Switzerland. Most of the cities on the list are from Australia and New Zealand, where the number of Covid-19 casualties per 1,000 citizens was low, and lockdown restrictions were lifted early. Only two European cities made the list, mainly due to their cultural and sporting activities. Osaka and Tokyo also ranked in the top 10 due to their effective policy measures in controlling the pandemic.
